Central Auditory Processing Disorders (CAPD) Working Group

APD Infographic The Central Auditory Processing Group (CAPD) Working Group is a joint VA-DOD consortium of interested hearing health care researchers and clinicians who work to improve diagnosis, management, and outcomes of auditory processing dysfunction for Service members and Veterans. Our population of interest typically has normal or near-normal hearing sensitivity, worse-than-expected results on tests of auditory processing, and known exposure to possible risk factors.

We develop tools and resources to:

  • identify militarily relevant risk factors for CAPD;
  • recognize symptoms, deficits, and comorbidities that may complicate the evaluation and management of auditory processing deficits; and
  • advance evidence-based treatment strategies to address complex military risk factors and injuries.
Our strategy:
  • Evaluate and advance the state of the science
  • Conduct outreach and education
  • Bring evidence-based practices to DOD and VA clinicians
  • Educate ourselves and each other
