Title: A Decade of Insight into Veterans’ Hearing Health: Findings from the NOISE Study

Overview: The Noise Outcomes in Service Member Epidemiology (NOISE) study is a multi-site longitudinal epidemiology study following Service members (SMs) and Veterans to understand how noise and other military exposures affect hearing and tinnitus over time. Since its inception in 2014, the study has gathered extensive data on the prevalence, etiology and effects of early-onset tinnitus and hearing loss, offering insights that may help inform preventative measures and clinical services. To date, over 1500 individuals have been enrolled. Our findings suggest active-duty military service members and Veterans have a higher risk of experiencing tinnitus and hearing loss, likely due to noise exposure and other factors related to military service. After 10 years of data collection, we now have a deeper understanding of the causes of auditory health concerns and how they progress. This presentation will highlight a decade of data with a focus on population -level trends and longitudinal case studies that explore objective audiologic measures in Veterans. Continued data collection will produce an unprecedented epidemiologic dataset revealing cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between a wide range of exposures, medical and mental health conditions, peripheral auditory function, central auditory function, and tinnitus, knowledge that will assist with conservation and treatment efforts.

Learner Outcomes: Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:
• Discuss the aims of the NOISE study as it pertains to the longitudinal epidemiological study of military exposures and audiologic outcomes.
• Identify the audiologic tools that can be used to capture military exposures and audiologic outcomes
• Describe how hearing loss and tinnitus progress during and following military service
