Title: Sound Ethics: An Overview of Ethical Decision-Making Frameworks for Audiologists

Overview: Navigating ethical dilemmas is a vital component of professional practice for audiologists. This talk provides an overview of several ethical decision-making frameworks tailored to the unique challenges faced by audiologists. This presentation aims to equip audiologists with robust tools for systematically addressing ethical issues. Key frameworks discussed will include the Four Principles Approach, professional organizations’ codes of ethics and conduct, and the RIPS (Realm-Individual Process-Situation) Model of Ethical Decision-Making.

After reviewing frameworks, the presentation will delve into practical applications by examining common ethical dilemmas encountered in audiology. These scenarios will cover issues related to patient confidentiality, informed consent, student clinician supervision, and conflicts of interest. Each dilemma will be analyzed using the discussed frameworks, illustrating how they can guide audiologists in resolving complex ethical situations. The objective of this session is to enhance the ethical competence of practicing audiologists and foster a culture of ethical awareness and proactive decision-making. This session will provide case studies for audiologists to apply ethical principles in their everyday practice, ultimately improving patient care and professional integrity.

As a result of this presentation, participants will be better able to describe ethical decision-making framework and its relevance to clinical practice, apply an ethical decision-making framework to an ethical dilemma to identify appropriate resolution which audiological variables are important to consider when addressing speech recognition in noise in a clinic setting, and discuss, compare, and contrast venues to adjudicate potential violations of ethical codes and professional standards.
