Marquam Hill Audiology Grand Rounds - CEU Details

The current month's grand rounds info and CEU documents are below (see CEU information at the bottom of the page).

Date: Wednesday, March 5, 2025

Time: 12-1pm (Pacific)

Location: Virtual via Microsoft Teams

Presenter:
Frederick Gallun, PhD, is a Professor at the Oregon Hearing Research Center, Oregon Health & Science University, in Portland, Oregon.

Title: Auditory difficulties following head injury: Opportunities for enhanced care

Overview: Over the past decade, it has become increasingly clear that head injury, which often results in mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), is associated with ongoing auditory complaints, even though audiometric changes appear to be rare. While research is still ongoing as to the source of these complaints and the implications for auditory processing, it is obvious that patient care needs to evolve to address the difficulties patients are experiencing. This presentation will introduce a short auditory questionnaire developed for this population and will present preliminary data supporting its use clinically. Discussion will involve the needs and opportunities for collaborations between clinicians and researchers to further understand and address the auditory complaints of those with a history of head injury.

Learner Outcomes: Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:
• Describe the evidence relating head injury to auditory complaints.
• Identify the auditory symptom questions most important to ask a patient with a history of head injury.
• Discuss the areas in which clinical expertise and experience can assist with understanding the open questions in auditory difficulties following head injuries.

Disclosure statement: Dr. Erick Gallun has the following relevant financial relationships to disclose; he receives funding in the form of NIH award R01 DC 018166: Enhanced environments for psychophysical evaluation and training (2020-2025). He has no non-financial relationships to disclose.
